General Service Schedule

Tuesday, March 7th, 2017

Keeping your car up and running doesn’t involve much guesswork, unless you lost or don’t have an owner’s manual. Fortunately, there’s a general guide you can follow to keep your car properly serviced. Here’s a general service schedule from us here at Hassett Pre-Owned so you can keep your car running at peak performance.

General Service Schedule - Fluid

Weekly

Drivers would do well to check their windshield washer fluid and engine oil levels weekly, if not more often. Make sure all lights are working, including the dashboard indicator lights. Check tire inflation and condition too.

Three Months/3,000 Miles

Every three months or 3,000 miles, make sure to check the oil, engine air filter, power steering fluid, automatic transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Inspect the battery, cables, belts, hoses, and exhaust as well.

General Service Schedule - Oil

Six Months/6,000 Miles

In addition to the previously listed items, drivers should check their chassis lubrication every six months or 6,000 miles. Make sure to change the oil at this point if you haven’t already.

12 Months/12,000 Miles

Most vehicles are engineered for minimal attention which is why most items can go unchecked for one year or 12,000 miles. Make sure to check the wheel alignments, steering, suspension, coolant, brakes, and wiper blades.

Over caring for your car won’t hurt, but neglecting general service can lead to disaster.

Spring Car Maintenance Tips

Monday, March 31st, 2014

Can you believe spring is finally here? It’s been a long time coming, but alas, warmer weather is right around the corner and *knock on wood*, the snow is done for the year.

And with the changing of the seasons it’s important to remember to do some car maintenance. Sometimes its best to bring your car into a service center to get it looked at, but there are a lot of things you can do on your own to make sure your car keeps running strong for years to come. Keep reading below for a short list of spring car maintenance tips:

  • Make sure your windshield wipers are in good working order. Springtime is one of the rainiest times of the year and it’s good to make sure both the front and rear wipers can effectively clear rain out of your line of sight.
  • Check your fluids. This tip isn’t by any means exclusive to the spring. However, it is good to get in the habit of checking all your cars fluids, especially the coolant and oil, at the changing of seasons.
  • Clean all the junk out of your trunk. Things tend to get piled up and stored in cars during the winter months, so whether it by an old fruit cake or chains for your wheels, go ahead and get that unnecessary weight out of your car so you can increase MPG.

And that’s all we have for today! Do you have any other spring car maintenance tips? Feel free to share them in the comment section below.

Summer Car Maintenance (Part 3)

Friday, August 23rd, 2013

If you keep up with our blog, then you know that about a month ago we started a blog series that gives tips on keeping your car in tip-top shape in the summer months. So far we’ve done two installments, and tips have included everything from making sure your windshield wipers are good-to-go, to checking all the belts and hoses under the hood. Well today we are happy to present the third and final installment of this car maintenance series.

So without further ado, here are the last three tips we have for you!

  • Make sure your brakes are in good shape. Obviously this tip doesn’t only apply to summer. You should make sure your cars brakes are in good shape regularly as they are the single most important safety feature on your car. If the lining on your brake pad is worn down past the minimum thickness, be sure to get them switched out for some fresh pads.
  • Check the coolant and radiator. Cars are designed to be able to withstand a lot of heat, but in the summer, when you’re in stop-and-go traffic, and it’s 100 degrees outside, you need to be sure your car is loaded up on coolant. Compare it to going running on a hot day, as opposed to running on a pleasant day. Which day do you think you will need more water? Point: made.
  • And Lastly, clean your battery.  According to howstuffworks.com, “Summer heat can speed up the chemical reaction inside a battery, causing the battery to be overcharged. This can dramatically shorten the lifespan of your battery. Heat can also damage the battery by evaporating internal battery fluid.” If you notice your battery is struggling, take it to a service shop and get it looked at by someone who knows what they’re doing.

There you have it! Those are our nine summer car maintenance tips. We hope you learned a lot! And always remember, if you need any assistance whatsoever keeping your ride up to snuff, stop by Hassett Automotive. Any one of our knowledgeable service professionals would love to help you get your car running like new!

Summer Car Maintenance (Part 2)

Friday, July 26th, 2013

A couple weeks ago we did a blog with a few summer car maintenance tips. Just to recap, those tips were: Check your tires, Change your oil and oil filter, and de-winterize your car. But that’s just a few of the many things you can do to make sure your car is good-to-go for the summer months. Today we’d like to take a second and go over a few more things you can do to make sure your car keeps running strong during the hottest time of the year.

  • Check all the belts and hoses. The key to keeping your engine happy in the summer is keeping it cool. And just like you would want some nice cold water to keep you cool on a hot day, your car needs some coolant to keep it cool. So make sure all those hoses and belts under the hood are in good working order (AKA no cracks or leaks).
  • Your cars air filter can get clogged with sand and salt over the winter months, so to make sure your car can breathe, and is getting maximum MPG, change your air filter. The DOE even states that replacing a clogged filter can improve mileage by as much as 10 percent.
  • Summer’s are notorious for thunderstorms that pop-up out of nowhere. Make sure your ready to take on a torrential downpour with some fresh wiper blades. They’re not too expensive and you can get them at most department stores.

Keep checking our blog for the third and final installment of Summer Car Maintenance Tips which should be up sometime in the next couple weeks. And remember – Hassett Automotive is here for all your car care needs! If you need any help getting your car back in tip top shape, give us a call.

Summer Car Maintenance (Part 1)

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Summer is officially here! That means it’s time for warm weather, vacations, cookouts, and pool parties. However, it also means it’s the time of the year that your car hates that most. That’s right. Just when you thought summer was full of only awesome and fun things, we had to go spoil that for you. But wait! Even though summer can definitely be tough on your car, and even take years off its life, there are several things you can do to make sure your car is good-to-go for the hot summer months.

  • Check your tires. And we’re not only talking about the four tires at each corner of your car. Make sure you check your spare tire too! All five of your car’s tires should have adequate tread and air pressure. One fun and easy way to check tread is to stick a penny in the tread of the tire – if Abe’s head disappears, you’re golden!
  • Change oil and oil filter. I am just as guilty as anyone for procrastinating on an oil change. But what I didn’t realize is that oil is the lifeblood of your car! It’s what keeps all those moving parts moving correctly so you can get from point A to point B safely. Don’t wait! Get it done now at the beginning of summer.
  • This may seem obvious, but you need to de-winterize your car. In other words, if you put snow tires on your car for winter, take them off. It’s not winter anymore and this quick and painless change will save you lots of moolah at the gas pump.

We hope these tips are useful for you! Keep checking our blog for more tips coming in the next couple weeks. And always remember, Hassett is always here to help you with all your car maintenance needs. Stop by today and let us get your car up to snuff!

After a Hard Working Winter, Pamper Your Car this Spring

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

The last snow fall has been plowed away, and now it’s time to start planning your spring road trip!  To wash away the winter dirt and grime from your car and prepare for the spring, we consulted with autoMedia.com for some After-Winter Car Care tips.

Clean it up: Wash away the salt residue and dirty streaks with a good car wash.  Make sure to target important areas like the underbody, around the front and rear bumpers and wheel wells.  While you are taking care of this dirty task, check for any rust damage.

Tires: Excessive snow and ice can wreck havoc on your tires, so make sure to check the tread and tire pressure.  Also, even if you don’t need new tires, make sure to get them rotated.  Right now we have a special for a free tire rotation.

Brakes: Makes sure to have your brakes inspected by a professional.  They play a huge role in keeping you safe during the winter and we want that to continue through the spring and summer.  At Hassett Automotive, we are also having a special for a free brake inspection.

Battery: Unless you enjoy being stranded, you should get your battery checked.  Winter weather takes a toll on many of the battery components.  Stop by our dealership for a free battery testing.

Stop by our dealership to take advantage of our great offers and have your vehicle inspected today.  Our staff here at Hassett Automotive hopes you stay safe on the roads this spring!
